Skills Training

During the summer of 2006 the GJC conducted a six-week training program in Thailand for women from Burma that included office management skills, English, gender violence and equality, constitution drafting and international law. The women were from countries as varied as Nepal, India, China, and Bangladesh and represented various women's ethnic groups. The GJC also worked with the women individually to help them develop a gender equality platform specifically targeting their home audience. The women were encouraged to conduct similar trainings when they returned to their organizations.

The training sessions revolved around three main areas. First, the GJC worked with the activists on how to work with women in the refugee camps and to break down the cultural barriers that often lead victims of violence to let their crimes go unreported. The women were taught techniques such as "story-boarding" where women draw portions of their story in order to facilitate a dialogue traditionally taboo topics. In addition, the women also learned about government frameworks and which ones best foster gender equality. Finally, the group discussed the history of international law and the new mechanisms which exist for enforcing gender equality.
